🌍 General Orientation

Hell’s Gate National Park lies south of Lake Naivasha in Nakuru County, within Kenya’s central Rift Valley, about 100 km northwest of Nairobi.
The park covers roughly 68 square kilometers and is defined by dramatic cliffs, volcanic formations, deep gorges, geothermal features, and open savannah plains.

The park’s main access road runs roughly east–west, parallel to Moi South Lake Road, which connects Naivasha town to the park gates and nearby attractions like Elsamere, Camp Carnelley’s, and the Olkaria Geothermal Spa.


🚪 Entry Gates and Access Points

Hell’s Gate has three official gates, each connecting to different regions of the park:

  1. Elsa Gate (Main Gate)
    • Location: Eastern edge of the park, along Moi South Lake Road.
    • Facilities: Park headquarters, ticket office, information center, washrooms, and bike rentals.
    • Usage: Main entrance for most visitors, including cyclists and day visitors from Naivasha.
    • Nearby Landmarks: Fischer’s Tower, Obsidian Caves.
  2. Ol Karia Gate (Southwestern Gate)
    • Location: Southwest corner near the Olkaria Geothermal Power Station.
    • Usage: Entry for visitors going to Olkaria Geothermal Spa or Hobley’s Volcano.
    • Nearby Features: Geothermal wells, hot springs, and volcanic hills.
  3. Narasha Gate (Southern Gate)
    • Location: Far south near the Maasai cultural villages and the Olkaria volcanic area.
    • Usage: Least frequented; mainly used for research, community access, or park management.
    • Nearby Landmarks: Olkaria Volcano, Narasha Manyatta (Maasai village).

🧭 Internal Layout and Key Routes

The park’s road network forms a loop system connecting all major gates, attractions, and viewpoints:

  • Main Access Road: Runs from Elsa Gate westward through the central park area toward Ol Karia Gate.
  • Buffalo Circuit: A loop in the eastern section offering excellent wildlife viewing and scenic stops near Buffalo Circuit cliffs.
  • Main Gorge Road: Leads from the park headquarters south toward Ol Njorowa (Hell’s Gate) Gorge.
  • Central Tower Trail: Connects the main gorge route to Central Tower, a volcanic plug visible from most of the park.
  • Olkaria–Narasha Track: Extends west to the Olkaria Geothermal Field and Narasha plains, linking to Hobley’s Volcano.

Most routes are gravel or dirt tracks, suitable for 4x4s and bicycles. The park’s compact size allows easy exploration by vehicle or bike within a single day.

1. Fischer’s Tower

  • Located just 1.5 km from Elsa Gate.
  • A 25-meter volcanic plug ideal for rock climbing and photography.
  • According to Maasai legend, it represents a woman turned to stone.
  • Popular starting point for cyclists and hikers.

2. Obsidian Caves

  • Northeast of Fischer’s Tower.
  • Formed by solidified lava glass (obsidian) after volcanic eruptions.
  • Small caves with shiny black walls — accessible via a short walk or bike detour.

3. Main and Lower Gorges (Ol Njorowa Gorge)

  • Central attraction — deep sandstone canyons carved by geothermal streams.
  • Accessed via the Lower Gorge Trail south of the central ranger station.
  • Features hot springs, narrow walls, and geothermal vents.
  • Local guides required for hikes due to safety and navigation.

4. Central Tower

  • A second volcanic plug located in the central valley.
  • Visible landmark from multiple points, offering scenic picnic areas and raptor viewing.

5. Naiburta Canyon

  • Eastern scenic detour along the cycling circuit.
  • Excellent for wildlife viewing and photography.

6. Hobley’s Volcano

  • In the southwestern corner near Olkaria.
  • Extinct volcanic cone named after geologist Dr. C.W. Hobley.
  • Offers panoramic views toward Mount Longonot and the Rift Valley.

7. Olkaria Geothermal Station

  • Africa’s largest geothermal power field, operated by KenGen.
  • Visitors can observe steam pipelines, turbines, and geothermal vents from viewing areas.
  • Demonstrates renewable energy production within a protected ecosystem.

8. Olkaria Geothermal Spa

  • West of Olkaria Gate.
  • Large, turquoise, naturally heated lagoon fed by geothermal water.
  • Facilities: Sauna, showers, cafeteria, changing rooms.
  • Open to park visitors for relaxation and wellness experiences.

9. Narasha Gate & Olkaria Volcano

  • Far southwest, near Narasha plains and Maasai cultural villages.
  • Features Olkaria Volcano, a remnant of the region’s tectonic origins.
  • Excellent for guided off-road trips or extended hiking routes.
